Counting:
In the Montessori classroom, we begin learning numbers/counting with children are first introduced to quantities. This means the child should count "how much of something" when hearing the name of the number.
Example 1: "Give me 3",child give three objects to adult.
Example 2: "How many dots do you see on this paper?" Child counts and then says how many.
After counting quantities is mastered, then numerical symbols are introduced.
Example: Child sees the number written on a sticky note, child names the number correctly. No counting is involved.
Finally, when both skills are mastered they may be combined. It recommended to start these lessons with 0-10 numbers first, then teen numbers, and then go higher to reach 100.
